Blue Sky Services & Restoration would like to highlight a service we provide which benefits part time residents, businesses, co-ops, HOA’s, and the average, busy person. Disaster Recovery Plans have been around for a few years. This is an action plan for you to follow in case of a disaster emergency like a fire, severe water damage, or any other extensive damage that may displace you, require emergency service, or that may require replacement of all or part of your contents.
This is how it works: Blue Sky sends a representative to meet with you and gather all of the information that we know is necessary in the event of a disaster. This may include the name, contact number, and policy number for your insurance; preferred handy men, plumbers, electricians and their contact info; pertinent information regarding your home or office, such as, main water shut offs, location of the main breaker, pilot light shut offs; etc. We also collect contact information for the decision maker for your property whether that is you, a landlord, and HOA, etc. Blue Sky can even inventory your contents especially electronics, furs, jewelry, fire arms or other “big ticket” items. This inventory would include photos. The level of detail included in your Disaster Recovery Plan is up to you.
Each DRP can be customized to your particular needs. For instance, in a business setting key information may be the owner of the property, their representative, their insurance, their contact info and so on. However, in a residential home the focus may be more on documenting your contents so you have a record of what was there in the event of a devastating fire or even a theft. What is the benefit of a customized DRP? There are many. The primary being that with a plan in place you are not left to scramble or panic. You know who to call. If you are out of town, your representatives know who to call. You know what process to follow. All of the information you need is collected, it is together, and there are 2 copies.
Part of a complete DRP would include preauthorization for a set dollar amount of emergency work. So, you do not waste valuable days running around and collecting bids while your structure and/or contents become more damaged. Your DRP would include a checklist of items to include in a fire and water safe lock box and the location of the lock box so you or your representative can lay hands on personal papers quickly and you can be assured they survive the disaster.
Another benefit, is that you make decisions beforehand as to what you will do, where you will go, who you will work with, etc. This prevents you from making decisions under pressure that you may regret. Of course, as the preceding article mentioned, a DRP includes a review of your insurance policy and asking all the little questions that arise when you have to file a claim.
